Part of the reason for this might be said to be the availability of yerba--as these will mostly hold a larger quantity of tea. Also the practice there is often to drink yerba mate for a long duration. A wide rim, or mouth, allows for a broad pouring pattern--not wetting all of the yerba--which allows for a longer-lasting 'mate'. An essential item for the Brazilian chimmarrao!
