The clip fits nicely on beakers, frothers, or French presses... however it can be removed for tea kettles and other odd shaped vessels. We have tried it in our stainless steel pavas and it works well even when the tip is touching the bottom of the kettle.
We like our tea water when it reaches 70-degrees Celcius (~160-degrees F)--smack dab in the middle of the visible "red pie" slice.
